Notes from the composer:
This is part one of my two-part suite. The second movement is called Joy.
I wrote Sorrow and Joy together as a way to process a difficult season of my life around the mid-2010s. This was an improvisation that I memorized and would play differently every time for years. When I recorded this around 2018, I didn't have a score in front of me; sometimes there are little hesitations because I was still deciding what happens next while I was recording!
I am grateful to Klangio AI for helping me transcribe. I had to edit the score still, but it helped so much with what I thought was an overwhelming task.
Sorrowful and moody, this piece evokes feelings of sadness and disappointment.
I am encouraged when God brings joy to my heart in the midst of sorrow and it often feels like the sun coming out after a long, stormy night. I hope this piece, along with Joy, encourages you.
